Hey Gang!
This is Hot Stuff! 🔥
Have you heard about the latest breakthrough in robotics?
Researchers have developed a miniature robot that can morph its shape by melting & reforming itself, allowing it to maneuver through tight spaces easily thus, even escape behind bars. While it may sound like a science fiction concept, the team drew inspiration from a marine animal — the sea cucumber. These creatures can rapidly & reversibly change their stiffness, inspiring researchers to mimic this ability in soft materials systems.

Traditional robots are typically stiff and hard-bodied, which makes it difficult for them to navigate through small spaces. Soft robots, on the other hand, tend to be weaker and more challenging to control. To overcome these limitations, the researchers created a strong and flexible material by allowing it to shift between liquid and solid states.
The robot is made of gallium, a metal with a low melting point of about 86 degrees Fahrenheit. It contains embedded magnetic particles that allow scientists to control the robot’s movements using magnets. This way, the robot can be prompted to move, melt, or stretch as required. The magnetic particles also enable the robot to respond to an alternating magnetic field, which produces electricity inside the metal and raises its temperature. Using this magnetic field, the material can be heated up and caused to undergo a phase change, which can then be reversed through ambient cooling to solidify again. The team behind this invention calls it a “magnetoactive solid-liquid phase transitional machine.”
The robot demonstrated incredible capabilities in a series of tests, including jumping up to 20 times its body length, climbing walls, soldering a circuit board, and escaping from a mock prison. It could also support an object weighing about 30 times its weight in its solid state.
The researchers believe that this technology could have applications in the biomedical field. They demonstrated this by using the robot to remove a ball from a model human stomach. The solid robot could quickly move to the ball, meltdown, surround the ball, merge back into a solid, and travel with the object out of the model. While gallium was used in this test, the metal’s melting point is lower than a human stomach’s temperature. The researchers suggest adding other metals to the material to raise its melting point.
Overall, this breakthrough in robotics is a remarkable achievement that could revolutionize the field. With its flexibility and shape-shifting capabilities, the robot could be used in various applications, from exploring space to performing delicate surgical procedures.
